Smari - Ullälvas Smári

Icelandic Sheepdog Smari now has his frozen semen available in the US. Not only was he an International Champion in Europe but he was also a Norwegian Champion, a Swedish Champion, a Netherlands Champion, and a Finnish Champion. Smari was bred by the late Lillemor Kullman. Here are some photos of him and as many of his ancestors as I could find. The further back you go, the harder it is to find good photos. Clicking on photos may enlarge them.

Smari's inbreeding score is 0.85% for five generations
Hips scores are included when known

I think his pups will do very good in the conformation ring. I'm anxiously awaiting pups from him with my own Ulfbehrta Kit soon. They should also be good in the performance/obedience rings. In my opinion his semen, his genes, are valuable for the future diversity of Icelandics. Breeders interested in producing puppies for the show rings (conformation and/or performance-obedience etc.) can contact me for reasonable rates for using his frozen semen and/or for his puppies: -

Colchicums

I love, love, love Colchicums. In the spring they produce thick daylily-like leaves which produce and store energy for their fall flowers which arise amaryllis-like from the soil in late September. There are several varieties so there are flowers up to Thanksgiving in November. They are always appreciated and, in my opinion, mark a nice end to the summer and the arrival of autumn. What a great way to end the growing season. And, and they spread easily. Maybe too easily.

When I first moved here I planted some Corylus. Got a few nuts last year and even more this year. So far the squirrels haven't found them (but I know they will eventually). My heirloom tomatoes self seed in the garden and every year they come up and produce lovely old fashioned tomatoes. Sure they come in long after the tomatoes everyone else plants but I don't have to lift a finger - they self seed in the garden and grow without my help. Just enough for BLTs. Yummy! The mist rising from the water plus the sunlight on the water almost, if you use your imagination, made it look like the water was on fire. Sometimes the seagulls congregate just offshore - as do the Canada Geese.

I do get lovely sunrises but my forest hides the sunsets. I still do get some nice cloud colors as the sun is going down. Moon shots are always nice, imo. Often I get two ships passing - sometimes going in the same direction, sometimes going in opposite directions. Three ships passing is a new one though. I've heard that the curvature of the earth prevents seeing things further out than about ten miles. I sometimes see just the smokestacks of ships the rest being hidden. I'd guess the third ship is about ten miles +/- out.

Vinlands Kria

 From Michele and Caitlin: -

Here are some recent Kria pictures! She has the cutest smile! We recently adopted a kitten and they have become best friends! She is so gentle with him they play so well together. Included a picture where she looks crazy because she is playing ball in the backyard but wanted to show off her gorgeous white tail!

(Look closely at the photo of Kria with her new "ginger" friend - looks to me like another case of polydactyly!)

A lifetime ago I visited my cousin Carlo in Denmark. He showed me the site where his Grandmother Marie and her sister, my Grandmother Lise (Elisabeth), were born and raised. The apple tree to my right was near the home they shared. I suspect this newer growth came from suckers from the original tree. Nearby was a prune-plum tree. From the roots of that tree Carlo planted a tree at his home. The photo below shows some plums from that tree. The photo reminds me of the unconditional love and support from my Grandma and two of my aunts.

Thought you might enjoy some recent photos of Birna…enjoying an outdoor cafe; playing with one of her (many) toys; and taking a walk, lakeside.

As you can see, she has adapted beautifully to both city and country life. We love her. She is great fun-smart, sweet, and a real cuddler. Timber remains clearly in charge, by the way.

Hope all is well with you and your ‘pack’!

Daniel, Veronica, and Vinlands Ulfbehrta Kit*

*I've been thinking that Kit could have another litter. I have some stored frozen semen from Ullalvas Smari (Ullälvas Smári) - INTUCH, NORDUCH, SUCH, LUXUCH, DKUCH, NUCH, FINUCH, SV-00, SV-01 EUW-01 that I could use with Kit. As you can see he is a true International Champion (first title) and had also earned Championship titles in several European countries including: - Norway, Sweden, Luxembourg, Denmark, Netherlands, Finland as well as the prestigious International title. I've calculated the inbreeding score for them at 0% - which is great. That means that there are no repeated ancestors as far back as five generations. Here are some photos of him: -

I'm wondering if anyone thinks I should go ahead with the cross? (jaimehansen1@frontier.com)
